Knife Attack Kills 19 at Japan Disability Center, Official Says

By Issei Kato SAGAMIHARA, Japan (Reuters) – Nineteen people were killed and 25 wounded after an attack by a knife-wielding man at a facility for the disabled in central Japan early on Tuesday, a government official said, in Japan's worst mass killing in decades. Police have arrested Satoshi Uematsu, a 26-year-old former employee at the facility in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Tokyo, a Kanagawa prefecture official said. Uematsu had turned himself in, the official told a news conference carried on public broadcaster NHK.

Brazil is faced with a severe economic downturn, having been awarded the Olympics with the country experiencing a financial boom back in 2009. “It is, as you know, six months before the Olympic Games and it is the most difficult time to prepare for Games,” Bach, speaking at the Greek Olympic Committee headquarters, told reporters.

Late delay as Pacific trade talks near landmark deal

U.S. officials, who are hosting the meeting, delayed a planned joint news conference until early Monday. On Saturday, Amari had said the next 24 hours would be a make-or-break period for the talks. After five years of negotiations, many officials had described this round as the best chance for an agreement, so failure to strike a deal in Atlanta would plunge the future of the talks into uncertainty.

Gemalto reports 19 percent rise in Q1 revenue

(Reuters) – Mobile chip and smart card maker Gemalto reported a 19 percent rise in first-quarter sales on constant exchange rates, its first release of results since finalizing the acquisition of U.S. data security company SafeNet in January. First quarter revenue rose to 686 million euros ($762.49 million) compared to 532 million euros in the previous year. The company beat analysts' expectations of 675 million euros in quarterly revenue. Gemalto, which makes smart chips for mobile phones, bank cards and biometric passports, said Payment & Identity segment's revenue was 369 million euros for the first quarter, an increase of 35 percent compared to the previous year, helped by the SafeNet acquisition.
