FDA approves Baxalta’s drug for rare bleeding disorder

(Reuters) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday it approved Baxalta Inc's drug for use in patients with a type of rare bleeding disorder. The drug, Adynovate, was approved to control and reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in patients with Hemophilia A, the agency said in a statement. Data from a late-stage study, which tested 137 patients, showed that Adynovate was effective in reducing and controlling bleeding episodes, compared with Advate.

Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed at Minnesota hospital; suspect dead

The suspect later died after a hospital guard subdued him with a Taser, authorities said. Aitkin County Sheriff’s Investigator Steven Sandberg, 60, had been guarding Danny Leroy Hammond, 50, who was being investigated in connection with a domestic incident, authorities said. Hammond got out of his hospital bed and took the officer’s firearm during a struggle, Drew Evans, superintendent of the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said at a news conference.
