Causes of Migraine Headaches

Millions of people around the world suffer from migraine headaches and there are medications to treat the symptoms, but if you suffer from these unbearable headaches, you would agree that the best thing is to prevent getting them altogether. Here are some common causes for migraine:

Food: certain foods such as cheese, chocolate, MSG, processed foods and drinks like red wine, beer and alcohol are known to trigger migraines.

Change in environment such as weather and pressure.

Stress at work or home is a main cause for headaches.

Sensory stimulation: Bright lights, glare of the sun, loud noises and smells, both pleasant ones such as certain perfumes and unpleasant smells can trigger an attack.

Hormonal changes in women: many women experience migraine before or after having periods or during menopause. This is due to the estrogen imbalance experienced during this period.

Changes in sleep pattern: not getting enough sleep and over sleeping can have an adverse reaction.

What is most important is identifying what triggers these attacks. Maintaining a dairy will help. Noting down everything you eat and drink and other experiences such as how much sleep you had will help you narrow down the reasons.
